Hippopotamus
The third largest land mammal, hippopotamuses frequent the shallow waters, swamps, rivers, and lakes in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. Notorious for their territorial nature, hippos are extremely dangerous and have been known to attack humans and flip boats.
- History: Despite their formidable nature, hippos are classified as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Although their global population is not declining as sharply as many other threatened and vulnerable species, it declining nonetheless due to habitat loss and fragmentation. More specifically, hippos across Africa are threatened by a loss of access to large bodies of fresh water.
